Miller Boer Goats
Hi There,
We thought we would dedicate a page to some of things that are going on around here and some of the things we have found
either interesting or helpful on the internet as well as some of the great websites out there that our fellow Boer Goat Enthusiats
have taken the time to put together.
Take some time and enjoy, Steve, Lin and Family
As we continue forward, we have found taking our bucks to test to be a great benefit. Breeders should take this as an opportunity to see where they are at, look at where they want to go, and if nothing else, meet other people who are in the industry and get "recharged". From the test and attending the 4S goat expo, we have learned that we need to concentrate on fast growth, but not only on fast growth, but fast growth on pasture. We are looking to raise animals that are going to be able to put on the pounds without a huge outlay in supplemental feeding. As we are looking to the future we think it is going to be important to ensure an overall quality carcass....it isn't just the pounds that matter, but where those pounds are. With that in mind pay attention to that rib eye score. Those bucks with high scores brought a premium at the buck test!
Some really great sites to visit!
How many times have you wished you knew if a doe was bred? How important is that in the management of your herd? If you are carrying open does and feeding them through the winter, it could be a great cost savings to know if your stock is open. That gives you the opportunity to either re-expose your does or sell them. We have purchased a preg-tone ultrasound, and will be providing this service. For more information please contact us.
Although you may be a commercial breeder, take the time to consider that your buck is 1/2 of your herd. With this in mind, it pays to purchase a fullblood buck of known bloodlines and performance characteristics. The cattle industry already does this, and are able to get better gains from their grade cows, by putting them with bulls with proven bloodlines. Why would we do any less?
